Local government meetings scheduled across Amarillo and Canyon this week

Several local governing bodies will meet this week to address routine business, policy decisions, and community concerns. Meetings of the Amarillo Independent School District Board of Trustees, the Randall County Commissioners Court, and the Canyon City Commission are all scheduled and will include opportunities for public comment.

Randall County Commissioners Court – Tuesday Morning

The Randall County Commissioners Court will meet Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. in the courtroom located at 501 16th Street in Canyon. The meeting will begin with recognition of county employees through the presentation of service pins and certificates.

Commissioners are expected to discuss and take action on several administrative and operational matters. One major agenda item includes approval of the early voting schedule and voting center locations for the 2026 joint primary elections, as required under the Texas Election Code.

The court will also consider accepting contracts related to county operations, including a bank depository agreement, inmate dental services, and construction manager-at-risk services for additions to the Randall County Justice Center. Additional items include declaring certain county-owned property as surplus inventory.

Budget-related matters are also on the agenda, with commissioners scheduled to review and approve budget amendments. They will also consider requests from county employees to attend meetings and conferences for professional development. As with all regular meetings, time will be allotted for public comments.

Amarillo ISD Board of Trustees – Monday Evening

The Amarillo Independent School District Board of Trustees will hold a regular meeting Monday beginning at 5:30 p.m. The meeting will take place in the Rod Schroder Education Support Center Board Room at 7200 Interstate 40 West.

Among the primary action items is consideration of the first reading of a portion of the district’s Policy Manual updates. These proposed updates cover a wide range of topics, including board meeting procedures, contracted services, technology resources, facility standards, employment requirements and restrictions, personnel and management relations, the school year calendar, special education, and student welfare, rights, and discipline.

The board will also review and consider a Teacher Certification Compliance Plan related to House Bill 2. In addition, trustees will consider a resolution connected to Senate Bill 11, which addresses a daily period for prayer and the reading of the Bible or other religious texts as allowed under the Education Code.

Another agenda item includes the nomination of an individual to fill a vacancy on the Randall County Appraisal District Board of Directors. The meeting will conclude with an opportunity for members of the public to address the board.

Canyon City Commission – Tuesday Afternoon

The Canyon City Commission will meet Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. in Council Chambers at 301 16th Street. Commissioners are scheduled to take action on ordinances related to removing certain properties from the City of Canyon’s jurisdiction.

The commission will also consider hiring Page & Associates as the contractor for bond-related public safety facilities construction and remodeling projects. Several grant applications are also on the agenda for consideration and possible acceptance.

In addition, commissioners will discuss street maintenance plans, with specific focus on brick street repairs and improvements to Hunsley Road. Like other local bodies meeting this week, the Canyon City Commission will nominate an individual to fill the current vacancy on the Randall County Appraisal District Board of Directors.

Public comments will be accepted during the meeting, allowing residents to share feedback or concerns on items within the commission’s purview.

These meetings provide residents with insight into local governance and an opportunity to stay informed and involved in decisions affecting schools, county operations, and city services.
