The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Amarillo District has released new information regarding a recent signal light warrant study along the southwest corridor of State Loop 335. The study, which examined traffic patterns and safety conditions, determined that several key intersections now meet the criteria for installing traffic signals.
According to TxDOT, the intersections at SL 335 and FM 2186, Arden Road, Hillside Road, and 34th Avenue were all found to qualify for signal lights based on multiple factors. These evaluations included:
Traffic volumes on both major and minor roadways
Pedestrian activity levels
Crash history and safety concerns
Delays currently experienced by drivers
Speed of vehicles approaching the intersections
TxDOT officials said that engineers are now developing signal plans to improve safety and traffic flow at these locations. However, the timeline for construction will depend on funding availability. At this time, the earliest installation work could begin is fall of 2026.
The southwest corridor of SL 335 currently operates with frontage roads that will eventually lead to the construction of the main highway lanes. Those main lanes are estimated to be built within the next five to ten years, depending on project progression and available funding.
In the meantime, TxDOT is urging drivers to remain cautious. Officials emphasize the importance of slowing down, especially in school zones and areas where pedestrians are more common. They also remind motorists to follow posted speed limits and stay alert to changes in traffic patterns as development continues.
