Authorities in Amarillo have charged 46-year-old Luis Anguel Rico with murder in connection with the death of James Valdez Sosa, also 46, after an RV fire earlier this week. Rico has been booked into the Potter County Jail as the investigation continues in cooperation with the Amarillo Fire Marshal’s Office. The announcement follows the completion of an autopsy and additional investigative work at the scene.
The incident occurred early Monday, October 27, 2025, when officers were dispatched at approximately 4:53 a.m. to the area of NW 5th Avenue and Lamar Street in response to reports of a trailer fire. When first responders arrived, the recreational vehicle was already fully engulfed in flames. Police worked quickly to secure the scene and evacuate nearby homes as firefighters began efforts to contain and extinguish the blaze.
After the fire was put out, firefighters discovered a deceased individual inside the RV. The victim was later identified as Sosa. Authorities confirmed that his family has been notified of his death.
According to police, witnesses in the area reported seeing someone walking away from the RV around the time smoke was first noticed. This information helped lead investigators to Rico, though officials have not yet released further details regarding a possible motive or the relationship between the suspect and the victim.
Officials emphasize that while an arrest has been made, the case remains active and additional details may be released as the investigation progresses.
