Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport was briefly placed on lockdown Saturday morning after a suspicious bag was reported by Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers.
The Amarillo Police Department (APD) said officers were called to the airport at approximately 9:54 a.m. after TSA indicated a bag had tested positive for explosive powder. In response, airport officials implemented a precautionary lockdown to ensure the safety of passengers, staff, and the surrounding area.
The APD Bomb Squad quickly arrived to investigate the situation. Using standard safety protocols, the specialized unit examined the bag and determined that it posed no threat to the public. After the investigation, the airport reopened at about 12:13 p.m., allowing normal operations to resume.
Authorities acknowledged that the incident caused concern for passengers and for traffic in and around the airport. The Amarillo Police Department thanked the public for their patience and cooperation while the investigation was underway.
No injuries or damages were reported during the incident, and flights continued as scheduled following the reopening. Airport and law enforcement officials emphasized that such precautionary measures are standard practice whenever a suspicious item is identified, ensuring public safety remains the top priority.
