The City of Canyon has announced the appointment of Dustin Meyer as the new Director of Planning and Development, effective September 29. Meyer, a long-time resident of Canyon, brings extensive experience in regional planning and public management to the role.
City officials noted that Meyer previously served as the executive director of the Panhandle Regional Planning Commission. His professional background also includes earning a bachelor’s degree in political science from West Texas A&M University, as well as obtaining a Certified Public Manager Certification from Texas Tech University. These qualifications, officials say, provide Meyer with the expertise necessary to oversee the city’s growing planning and development needs.
“I am very excited to begin my position with the City of Canyon as the Director of Planning and Development,” Meyer said. “As a long-time resident of the City of Canyon, I know first-hand what a great community Canyon is. Canyon is so fortunate to have great leadership in a proactive Mayor, City Manager and City Commission who are consistently looking to create opportunities for growth and sustainability for the community.”
Meyer’s new role encompasses oversight of the Planning and Development Department, which manages administrative functions, code enforcement, and building safety. City officials report that the department handled over 1,700 permits between September 2024 and September 2025, reflecting both residential and commercial growth in the area.
The department’s responsibilities are critical as Canyon continues to experience increased interest from both businesses and new residents. City Manager Joe Price emphasized the importance of Meyer's appointment in managing this growth.
“As Canyon’s development momentum continues to grow, both commercial and residential, Dustin’s knowledge and experience will lead Canyon into the future of growth,” Price said. “Everyone wants to be in Canyon right now, and we’re working to accommodate new residents and businesses while keeping our small town feel.”
City leaders said they are optimistic that Meyer’s leadership will help balance the city’s rapid development with the preservation of its character. Planning and development efforts in Canyon include ensuring that new construction meets safety standards, updating city codes, and supporting initiatives that promote economic growth while maintaining community values.
Meyer’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for Canyon, which has seen consistent population growth and commercial expansion in recent years. Officials hope that under his guidance, the Planning and Development Department will continue to streamline permit processes, enhance code enforcement, and facilitate projects that improve the quality of life for residents.
Residents and business owners can expect continued engagement from the department in upcoming development projects. With Meyer at the helm, the city aims to provide a proactive approach to planning, emphasizing sustainable growth and long-term community development.
