The Board of Regents of the Texas Tech University System is preparing to finalize its choice for the system’s next leader. The nine-member governing board will meet by video conference at noon on Tuesday, Sept. 30, for a special-called meeting with one item on the agenda: the approval of a new chancellor and Chief Executive Officer.
Earlier this month, the regents identified Texas State Senator Brandon Creighton as the sole finalist for the position. Creighton, a Republican from Conroe, has served in the Texas Senate since 2014 and chairs the Senate Committee on Education, giving him significant influence on statewide higher education policy. By naming him the only finalist, the board signaled its intent to select him as the successor to current Chancellor Dr. Tedd Mitchell.
Dr. Mitchell, who has served as chancellor since 2019, announced his plans to retire once the board formally names his replacement. His tenure oversaw continued enrollment growth across the system’s institutions, expansions in health sciences, and the advancement of several capital projects in Lubbock and beyond.
State law requires a 21-day waiting period after announcing a finalist before a governing board can take official action. That waiting period has now elapsed, clearing the way for Tuesday’s vote.
If confirmed, Creighton will officially assume the role on Nov. 17, 2025. As chancellor, he will oversee the Texas Tech University System’s four component institutions: Texas Tech University, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, Angelo State University, and Midwestern State University.
The appointment marks a significant transition for the system, which serves more than 63,000 students across Texas. Regents say the next chancellor will be tasked with continuing to grow academic excellence, research capacity, and healthcare education while maintaining strong ties with state leaders.
