Texas Tech breaks into preseason top 25 in both major polls

Texas Tech is making waves ahead of the 2025 college football season, earning spots in both the Associated Press (AP) Preseason Top 25 and the US LBM Coaches Poll. The Red Raiders were ranked No. 23 in the AP preseason rankings released recently, while they landed at No. 24 in the Coaches Poll last Monday.

This marks a significant milestone for Texas Tech, which last appeared in the AP Top 25 back in 2018. On September 23 of that year, the Red Raiders climbed to No. 24 after a dominant 41-17 victory over Oklahoma State, holding a 3-1 record at the time. It’s also been more than a decade since the team was ranked simultaneously in both polls, the last occurrence being the November 23, 2013 edition. The last time Texas Tech began the season in both preseason polls was prior to their historic 2008 campaign.

The 2025 ranking is hardly a surprise given the Red Raiders’ impressive roster and coaching staff heading into the new season. Texas Tech boasts what many analysts consider the nation’s No. 1 transfer portal class. On top of that, the team returns five starters on offense and seven on defense. Senior quarterback Behren Morton leads the offense, bringing experience and leadership, while linebacker Jacob Rodriguez has been named the Big 12 Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, anchoring a stout defense.

Fans will get their first look at the team’s potential when Texas Tech opens the 2025 season on August 30 at 6:30 p.m. against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The game will be held at Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock, and tickets are still available. For those wanting to catch multiple games, the Red Raider 2-Pack offers tickets to any two games from the first three home matchups—Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Kent State, and Oregon State—starting at $60.

With momentum building, Texas Tech hopes to capitalize on the preseason buzz and make a deep run in the Big 12 conference this year. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if the Red Raiders can sustain this success on the field.
