Sergio Castillo named to 2025 Lone Star Conference Hall of Honor

For Sergio Castillo, success has never been a single moment — it’s been a steady drive to excel, year after year, kick after kick. On Thursday, August 7, the Lone Star Conference (LSC) announced that Castillo, a West Texas A&M graduate and current professional kicker with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League (CFL), will be the 2025 inductee into the LSC Hall of Honor.

Castillo becomes the 64th inductee in the Hall’s history, joining an elite list of athletes, coaches, and administrators who have left a lasting mark on the conference. The Hall of Honor recognizes individuals whose achievements bring pride to the LSC and whose impact extends well beyond their playing days.

A Legacy of Excellence at West Texas A&M

Castillo’s time at West Texas A&M from 2011 to 2013 was nothing short of spectacular.

All-time leading scorer in WT football history with 437 points.

LSC career record for most extra points made and attempted: 251-for-255.

Led the conference in scoring in both 2012 (149 points) and 2013 (129 points).

Connected on 62 career field goals, including a 56-yard bomb — one of the longest in league history.

Set an LSC record with 64 straight extra-point conversions.

His contributions were crucial in guiding the Buffs to the 2012 LSC championship, an NCAA Division II semifinal appearance that same year, and a quarterfinal berth in 2013. Along the way, Castillo was a four-time All-LSC selection, earned First Team All-American honors in 2012 and 2013, and won the 2013 Fred Mitchell Award for his excellence both on the field and in community service.

From College Star to Pro Standout

Castillo’s professional career began in 2014 when he signed as an undrafted free agent with the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons. He later played for the New York Jets in 2020, where he hit 8 field goals in six games, including a 55-yarder.

But it’s in the CFL where Castillo has truly flourished.

Grey Cup champion in 2021 with Winnipeg.

Played in 98 CFL games with 228 field goals and 376 kickoffs.

CFL All-Star in 2019 with the BC Lions after hitting 91.1% of his field goals (41-for-45).

Delivered a perfect 5-for-5 performance in the 2021 Grey Cup, including an extra point, helping Winnipeg secure a 33-25 overtime win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Key contributor in leading Winnipeg back to the Grey Cup in 2024.

Honored at Every Level

This latest recognition isn’t Castillo’s first Hall of Fame nod — in April 2024, he was inducted into the West Texas A&M Hall of Champions. Now, with his LSC Hall of Honor selection, he joins an even broader circle of celebrated alumni. Castillo is just the fourth Buff to receive this distinction, following quarterback Dustin Vaughan (2023) and volleyball greats Sarah Butler Carthel (2008) and Julie Myatt O'Dell (2005).

A Life Beyond the Field

Off the field, Castillo’s story is equally inspiring. A native of La Joya, Texas, he remains deeply connected to his roots and committed to giving back. He and his wife, Adriana, herself a former Lady Buff soccer player, are raising their son Jared while balancing the demands of professional sports.

Words from the Commissioner

LSC Commissioner Jay Poerner summed it up best:

“Sergio was an outstanding student-athlete who had tremendous success during his time in the league and still holds multiple kicking records. He is most deserving of this honor.”

Indeed, Castillo’s journey — from a standout at WT to a champion in the CFL — reflects not just talent, but consistency, discipline, and a passion for the game.
