Workers at Tyson Foods’ massive beef processing plant in Amarillo will see significant improvements in pay and benefits after Teamsters Local 577 ratified a new four-year contract with the company on Wednesday.
The agreement, approved by an overwhelming 93% of union members, includes a 32% wage increase, more paid time off, and expanded retirement benefits. The deal comes just days after the union had voted to authorize a strike, threatening to disrupt operations at the largest beef processing facility in the United States.
A tentative agreement was reached on Tuesday, narrowly averting a work stoppage that could have had wide-ranging effects on the nation’s beef supply chain.
“This victory is what Texas Teamsters are all about — coming together as one so we can fight for a better life for ourselves and our families,” said Al Brito, President of Teamsters Local 577, following the vote.
The union had been pressing for higher pay and improved working conditions at the plant, where thousands of workers are employed in what is considered one of the most hazardous jobs in the country.
“If you work in one of the most dangerous industries in the nation, you should be able to support your family and look forward to retirement,” said Jesse Case, Director of the Teamsters Food Processing Division.
Tyson Foods had remained largely silent throughout the negotiations but released a statement after the vote.
“We are pleased to have reached an agreement with the Teamsters Local 577 that continues to provide a competitive pay and benefits package for our Amarillo team members,” a company spokesperson said. “The agreement reflects our dedication and continued investment in our team members and the Amarillo community.”
