TxDOT to install flashing beacons near West Plains High School to improve pedestrian safety

In a move to enhance pedestrian safety at a busy intersection near West Plains High School, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will install Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) at the intersection of Arden Road and State Loop 335. The safety upgrade comes after a local student was struck by a vehicle while crossing in a marked crosswalk last month.

The incident occurred on the morning of June 16, when a West Plains High School student was hit while crossing SL 335 at approximately 8:30 a.m. Though the student was in the designated crosswalk, the driver failed to yield. The event prompted increased scrutiny of pedestrian safety in the area, especially during school hours.

What Are RRFBs?

RRFBs are high-visibility safety devices designed to alert drivers when a pedestrian is crossing the street. The system includes two bright amber lights mounted alongside pedestrian crossing signs. When a pedestrian presses the crossing button, the lights begin to flash rapidly, signaling drivers to stop and allow safe passage.

These beacons are proven to be effective. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT), RRFBs can increase motorist yielding rates at marked crosswalks to as high as 98%, although effectiveness may vary depending on factors like road layout, speed limits, and the number of traffic lanes.

Safety Tips for All Road Users

TxDOT is reminding both pedestrians and drivers to follow essential safety guidelines when using or approaching intersections equipped with RRFBs.

For Pedestrians:

Always look both ways before entering the crosswalk.

Wait for traffic to stop or clear before crossing.

Stay within the marked crosswalk and remain alert.

Wear bright or reflective clothing, especially during low-visibility conditions.

For Drivers:

Stop immediately if the yellow RRFB lights are flashing.

Yield to pedestrians already in the crosswalk.

Do not proceed until the pedestrian has fully crossed your lane.

Additional Safety Measures Underway

The installation of the RRFBs is expected to be completed and operational by mid-August, in time for the start of the new school year. These beacons will serve as a supplemental safety tool alongside the already active school zone signage and speed limits in the area.

TxDOT is also conducting a comprehensive study of the intersection, including an assessment to determine whether a full traffic signal is warranted. Findings from that study are expected to be released once the analysis is complete.

Future Roadway Plans

The current roads at the southwest portion of SL 335 function as frontage roads and are part of a long-term infrastructure plan. According to TxDOT projections, the main travel lanes for SL 335 are anticipated to be ready for bidding within the next five to ten years.

In the meantime, local officials and TxDOT encourage all drivers and pedestrians to remain cautious, especially in school zones and at active crosswalks, to help prevent further accidents and injuries.
