A 27-year-old man was shot and killed Monday morning after he opened fire at a U.S. Border Patrol facility located across from the McAllen International Airport, authorities confirmed.
The suspect, identified as Ryan Louis Mosqueda, was armed with an assault rifle and wearing a utility vest when he began shooting near the federal building shortly before 9 a.m., according to McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez. Federal agents stationed at the facility returned fire, striking and killing Mosqueda on the scene.
Police say a second rifle and additional ammunition were found at the scene, suggesting Mosqueda may have been prepared for a prolonged assault. Authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and have not released any information on a possible motive.
Chief Rodriguez told reporters that one law enforcement officer was injured during the exchange of gunfire, though it remains unclear whether the injury was caused by a bullet or shrapnel. The officer was taken to a nearby hospital and is expected to recover.
The shooting forced a temporary lockdown of the surrounding area, including nearby airport operations, though no flights were reported to be affected.
The FBI and U.S. Department of Homeland Security are assisting with the investigation, and officials say they are combing through the suspect’s background, digital devices, and any potential connections to extremist groups or mental health issues.
Mosqueda’s actions appear to have been carried out alone. Law enforcement officials are urging the public to come forward with any information that might help piece together what led to the shooting.
As the investigation continues, officials emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the public. The Border Patrol facility has resumed normal operations, though security has been temporarily heightened.
