President Donald Trump on Thursday dismissed a report from The Wall Street Journal that claimed he had approved military plans to strike Iran, stating publicly that he has not yet made up his mind.
“The Wall Street Journal has no idea what my thoughts are concerning Iran!” Trump posted on Truth Social early Thursday morning.
The Journal reported Wednesday night that Trump had signed off on a plan to target Iran’s nuclear infrastructure but was withholding final authorization in hopes that Tehran might abandon its nuclear ambitions. While Trump’s post did not directly deny the central claim — that plans were drafted and awaiting final approval — it emphasized his intent to keep his strategy ambiguous.
“I may do it, I may not do it. I mean, nobody knows what I’m going to do,” Trump told reporters during a brief exchange Wednesday morning. “I can tell you this — Iran’s got a lot of trouble. And they want to negotiate. And I say, why didn’t you negotiate with me before all this death and destruction?”
White House officials confirmed that President Trump has been holding daily meetings in the Situation Room with top members of his national security team to assess his options. The renewed focus on Iran comes amid escalating tensions between Tehran and Israel, with both sides engaging in threats and limited military actions. The U.S. has not yet participated in any direct military engagement.
Several of the president’s advisers have privately expressed concern over the potential for a broader conflict if the U.S. were to strike Iranian territory. Nevertheless, Trump has recently intensified his rhetoric, including a sharply worded social media post aimed at Iran’s Supreme Leader.
Trump stated that Iranian officials have reached out in recent weeks regarding the possibility of new negotiations, even suggesting a meeting at the White House — though he acknowledged that organizing such a meeting would be difficult under the current circumstances.
“Iran knows what it has to do,” Trump said. “I’ve been very clear. We’re not rushing into anything, but they know the consequences.”
