Autopsy confirms man died from self-inflicted gunshot during June 7 Walmart incident

The Amarillo Police Department has released new details regarding the officer-involved shooting that took place on the morning of June 7, 2025, in the parking lot of a Walmart at 4215 S. Georgia Street. The incident resulted in the death of Justin Lee Crouch.

According to police, the incident began around 11:38 a.m. when officers were dispatched to conduct a welfare check on a male who appeared to be sleeping inside a vehicle. The request came from Walmart loss prevention staff who had tried unsuccessfully to wake the individual.

Upon arrival, officers made contact with a single male occupant—later identified as Crouch—inside the vehicle. While attempting to communicate with him, officers observed a firearm in the car. Prioritizing safety, officers backed away from the vehicle.

A short time later, a gunshot was heard coming from inside the vehicle. Believing the situation had escalated, one officer discharged their weapon, firing four rounds toward the vehicle. Investigators have since confirmed that none of the officer’s rounds struck Crouch.

An autopsy was ordered by Justice of the Peace Garcia Flores and conducted in Lubbock, Texas. The report revealed that Crouch died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, confirming that he had fired a single round inside the vehicle.

Crouch was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers or civilians were injured during the incident.

The Amarillo Police Department’s Homicide Unit continues to investigate the full circumstances of the case. At this time, no further information has been released regarding the motivation behind Crouch's actions or the events leading up to the incident.
