Texas Tech University has officially secured the future of its men's basketball program, announcing a six-year contract extension with head coach Grant McCasland that will keep him at the helm through the 2030-31 season. The new deal not only solidifies McCasland’s long-term commitment to the Red Raiders but also elevates him into the upper echelon of the nation’s highest-paid college basketball coaches.
Since arriving in Lubbock ahead of the 2023-24 season, McCasland has delivered immediate and sustained success, compiling an impressive 51-20 overall record, including 26-12 in Big 12 play. His teams have been dominant at home with a 30-5 record at United Supermarkets Arena and have earned back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances, reestablishing Texas Tech as a national contender.
“Coach McCasland immediately built upon our men's basketball program's established success and continues working to raise and deliver on high expectations,” said Texas Tech Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt. “We look forward to an exciting future for Texas Tech basketball under Coach McCasland's leadership.”
Record-Breaking 2024-25 Campaign
The extension follows a historic 2024-25 season in which the Red Raiders posted a 28-9 overall record, went 15-5 in Big 12 play, and made a thrilling run to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. Tech earned a No. 3 seed—matching the program’s best—and defeated UNC Wilmington, Drake, and Arkansas before falling to eventual national champion Florida.
The team also notched several milestones during the season, including:
A program-record 15 Big 12 wins
Eight road victories, the most in school history
371 made 3-pointers, another program best
A total of 2,993 points scored, the most in a single season
Texas Tech finished No. 8 in the final AP Top 25 and spent a program-record six straight weeks in the Top 10 to close the season. The Red Raiders are widely projected to remain a top-10 team entering the 2025-26 campaign.
McCasland's Coaching Pedigree
McCasland, the 19th head coach in program history, now holds the best two-year start of any coach in Red Raider basketball history. His overall career record stands at 262-109, including 206-97 at the Division I level. He has reached the 20-win plateau in every full season of his coaching career—aside from the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign—and boasts a .706 career winning percentage.
Last season, McCasland was named to the Werner Ladder Naismith Men's College Coach of the Year Watch List, and his reputation continues to grow. This summer, he will serve as an assistant coach for the USA U19 National Team at the 2025 FIBA U19 World Cup in Lausanne, Switzerland, from June 28 to July 6, offering further exposure to elite international basketball.
A Revitalized Fanbase
Off the court, McCasland has reinvigorated the Red Raider faithful. The program hosted nine sell-outs during his tenure, with an average of 3,126 students attending Big 12 games while school was in session. In total, over 450,000 fans have packed United Supermarkets Arena across the past two seasons, signaling strong community engagement and excitement around the program’s future.
Looking Ahead
With a contract extension in hand, a roster brimming with talent, and growing national respect, McCasland now faces the challenge of turning Texas Tech into a perennial Final Four threat. But given the Red Raiders’ recent trajectory under his guidance, expectations in Lubbock have never been higher—or more justified.
