A fatal helicopter crash early Friday morning has claimed the life of 31-year-old Travis Chester of Miami, Texas, according to information released by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).
Authorities responded shortly after 7:20 a.m. following reports of a helicopter down approximately 7.5 miles northwest of Miami, near FM 2699. The crash site was located just a quarter-mile east of the rural roadway, in a remote section of Roberts County.
Chester, who officials identified as the pilot and the only person aboard the aircraft, was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained in the crash. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but there were no signs of survival.
As of Friday afternoon, the cause of the crash remains undetermined. The scene was secured by DPS as they awaited the arrival of investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Both agencies are expected to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, which will include analyzing flight data, examining the wreckage, and reviewing maintenance records and pilot history.
Chester was a known figure in the Miami community. While officials have not released details about the nature of the flight—whether it was agricultural, personal, or commercial—residents have expressed shock and grief over the loss.
"Travis was a kind, hardworking man with a deep love for flying," said one local resident who asked not to be named. "This is just heartbreaking."
