Amarillo to upgrade six intersections with safety improvements

Amarillo city officials are set to enhance safety at six intersections later this year as part of a nearly $800,000 project under phase four of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) safety improvement plan.

The initiative, launched in 2021, focuses on installing flashing yellow left-turn signals and upgrading the city’s traffic computer systems and video detection technology. The flashing yellow arrows aim to clarify when drivers can make permissive left turns while yielding to oncoming traffic.

“It makes it more obvious for drivers when they have a permissive left turn to yield to oncoming traffic,” said Alan Harder, Amarillo Public Works Director. “That flashing yellow, everybody knows that yellow means caution.”

The majority of funding for the project comes from a federal and state grant through TxDOT, aimed at improving roadways not under its direct jurisdiction.

Intersections slated for upgrades include 34th and Washington, 27th and Osage, 45th and Bell, and three locations along Western Street. Bidding for the project is expected to begin in the spring, with construction anticipated to start in late summer or early fall.
