Randall County crash leaves Canyon woman dead, two others injured

A Canyon woman died late Friday after a vehicle failed to stop at an intersection in Randall County, the Texas Department of Public Safety said.

The crash occurred at about 10:33 p.m. on Dec. 5 at the intersection of South Soncy Road and West Cemetery Road, DPS reported.

According to DPS, 18-year-old Karlee Barfoot of Amarillo was driving a 1995 Cadillac Deville west on West Cemetery Road when she disregarded a stop sign and entered the intersection. Her vehicle was struck by a southbound 2010 Chrysler Town & Country driven by 56-year-old Mardee Matlack of Canyon.

DPS said Matlack, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene from her injuries. Barfoot and a passenger, 20-year-old Jessica Barfoot of Amarillo, were taken to Northwest Texas Hospital with minor injuries. DPS said Karlee Barfoot had been wearing a seatbelt; Jessica Barfoot’s seatbelt use was unknown.

Authorities reported clear weather and dry roads at the time of the collision. The posted speed limit in the area is 55 mph, DPS added.

The Texas Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation into the crash, DPS said. Officials did not immediately release additional information about possible charges, contributing factors such as vehicle speeds, or whether impairment or other violations were suspected.

Family members and others connected to those involved had not released statements through the time of the DPS announcement, and no further details were provided by law enforcement. The department urged drivers to obey traffic control devices and to use seatbelts, noting seatbelt usage can reduce injuries in crashes.

Anyone with information about the collision was asked to contact the Texas Highway Patrol. No additional details were immediately released.
