District 3-5A play is officially underway, and Friday night delivered plenty of statement wins across the Panhandle as teams set the tone for the heart of the season.
Boys Basketball
Amarillo High 73, Plainview 50
Amarillo High wasted no time announcing its arrival in district play, opening with an impressive 73-50 victory over Plainview at the AHS Activity Center.
The Sandies raced out to a 22-12 lead after the first quarter and never looked back, extending the advantage to 41-24 by halftime. AHS showcased balance and depth, placing four players in double figures while controlling the tempo from start to finish.
Junior Jaxson Richards led the way with a team-high 21 points. Richards found his rhythm early at the free-throw line, sinking six in the opening quarter, then added a pair of three-pointers to cap off a strong night. Hud Shaffer followed with 17 points, nine of which came in the second half, while Bilal Ismail added 14.
With the win, Amarillo High improves to 12-3 overall and 1-0 in district play. Plainview drops to 4-8 and 0-1.
Tascosa 75, Lubbock High 41
Tascosa defended its home floor in dominant fashion, rolling past Lubbock High 75-41 to open district action.
The Rebels were sharp on both ends of the floor, building a comfortable lead early and continuing to pull away throughout the night. Ben Kenney paced Tascosa with 19 points, while Ty Collins added 14. LaDarius Godbolt and Demarcus Gilmore chipped in 13 points apiece to round out a balanced scoring effort.
Tascosa improves to 10-3 overall and 1-0 in district, while Lubbock High falls to 3-9 and 0-1.
Lubbock Monterey 79, Caprock 48
Lubbock Monterey pulled away in the second half to secure a 79-48 win over Caprock in its district opener.
The Plainsmen were powered by a big night from Elijah Smothers, who poured in a game-high 31 points. Sam Arrington was nearly as effective, finishing with 21 points as the duo combined for 51 of Monterey’s 79.
Monterey moves to 11-3 overall and 1-0 in district play. Caprock slips to 3-8 and 0-1.
Girls Basketball
Amarillo High 62, Plainview 31
Amarillo High continued its perfect district run with a convincing 62-31 home victory over Plainview.
The Lady Sandies set the tone early and never let up, improving to 3-0 in district play and 15-3 overall. Tyler Held delivered a standout performance, scoring a game-high 26 points, including 11 in the second quarter. Kensleigh Payne added 10 points, while Kam Soukup contributed eight.
Plainview falls to 10-6 overall and 0-3 in district.
Tascosa 91, Lubbock High 7
Tascosa made a loud statement Friday night, overwhelming Lubbock High 91-7 in a complete team effort.
The Lady Rebels were relentless from the opening tip, improving to 15-1 overall and 3-0 in District 3-5A. Alex Carter led all scorers with 21 points, while Analia Humphrey added 15. Nic’Kiyah Fisher finished with 14, and Devaeh Johnson chipped in 11.
Lubbock Monterey 75, Caprock 36
Lubbock Monterey continued to build momentum with a 75-36 win over Caprock.
The Lady Plainsmen have now won two straight since a district-opening loss to Coronado, improving to 2-1 in league play and 12-5 overall. Caprock was unable to slow Monterey’s pace as the Plainsmen pulled away early and cruised to the win.
