CISD, law enforcement respond after video of alleged student assault circulates online

Local law enforcement agencies are investigating a reported assault involving West Plains students after videos of the incident began circulating widely on social media. The Amarillo Police Department and the Randall County Sheriff’s Office both confirmed that they became aware of the situation after receiving numerous calls and being tagged repeatedly online.

According to officials, the incident occurred in Randall County on Tuesday, Nov. 4. While the exact circumstances of the altercation have not been publicly detailed, the video drew significant public attention, prompting many community members to contact police. Both agencies stated that they have taken reports and that the case is currently under active investigation.

In a statement acknowledging the large volume of calls and messages received, the Amarillo Police Department said, “We really appreciate everyone who took the time to call us or tag us to make sure we were aware — your concern for our community means a lot. Thank you all for caring and for helping keep our community safe.” The department emphasized that it is working jointly with the Randall County Sheriff’s Office to review the situation and determine appropriate next steps.

The Randall County Sheriff’s Office also issued a statement confirming that the incident involves two juveniles and that the matter is being handled by its Criminal Investigations Division. The office noted, “We appreciate the calls and concern for the victim involved. Please understand that the matter is being taken seriously and will be thoroughly investigated to ensure all appropriate actions are taken.”

As of now, authorities have not released the identities of those involved or additional details about what led to the reported assault. Because the incident involves minors, officials are limited in the information they are able to share publicly.

Canyon Independent School District, which includes West Plains High School, also addressed the situation after the video continued to circulate online. While noting the incident occurred off-campus and after school hours, the district confirmed that it has taken internal action. In its statement, Canyon ISD said, “The situation was immediately investigated in coordination with law enforcement, and appropriate disciplinary action has been taken.” The district added that it cannot disclose further specifics but emphasized that maintaining a safe and respectful environment for students remains a priority.

The video has prompted discussions among parents, students, and community members expressing concern about student safety and behavior outside of school grounds. However, school and law enforcement officials have not commented on what may have led to the confrontation or on the condition of the individuals involved.

At this time, no additional information has been released regarding potential charges, disciplinary measures, or the ongoing status of any students connected to the incident. Both APD and RCSO have stated that updates will be provided as the investigation progresses and more verified details become available.

This is a developing story, and further updates will be reported as new information is released by officials.
