Authorities confirmed that a suspected gunman is in custody following a mass shooting at the Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino in Eagle Pass on Saturday night that left two people dead and five others injured.
Among the deceased was Marcus “Mark” Antley, a retired U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agent and longtime Eagle Pass resident. Eagle Pass Mayor Aaron Valdez publicly recognized Antley in a statement Sunday, honoring his service and legacy.
“With profound sorrow, I join our community in mourning the tragic loss of Marcus ‘Mark’ Antley, a beloved community member and retired U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent, who was among the victims killed in the horrific shooting at the Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino,” Valdez wrote. “His passing leaves a deep void in the hearts of many.”
The second victim, according to Dimmit County Judge Martha Alicia Gomez Ponce, was a resident of Dimmit County. In a statement, Ponce expressed condolences to the family and urged unity and support during what she called a “tragic and senseless” event.
Arrest After Multi-Agency Pursuit
The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Keryan Jones of San Antonio, was taken into custody after a coordinated pursuit involving multiple law enforcement agencies. According to the Eagle Pass Police Department (EPPD), Jones was captured in Stockdale, located in Wilson County, east of San Antonio, following the use of a taser. A firearm was also recovered during the arrest.
Authorities said Jones was tracked using license plate recognition technology, which alerted the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and enabled the vehicle interception.
Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber announced Sunday that Jones faces two counts of capital murder and five counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
The capture, Sheriff Schmerber said, was the result of coordinated efforts between the Eagle Pass Police Department, DPS, U.S. Border Patrol, and the Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas (KTTT) Police Department.
Community in Mourning
As the investigation continues, officials have not released any information regarding Jones’s motive. Authorities confirmed the five surviving victims are receiving medical treatment, though their conditions have not been publicly disclosed.
Meanwhile, community leaders and residents have turned their focus to honoring the victims. Antley, widely remembered for his decades of public service with CBP, was described as generous, dedicated, and deeply connected to Eagle Pass.
Judge Ponce echoed similar sentiments in calling for strength and unity within Dimmit County. “Let us come together in unity and support for the victims and their loved ones,” she said.
The Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino, owned and operated by the Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas, has not yet issued a public statement on the shooting.
