Bishop Zurek of Amarillo responds to election of Pope Leo XIV

The Catholic Diocese of Amarillo released an official statement Thursday afternoon from Bishop Patrick J. Zurek, offering his thoughts and prayers following the election of Cardinal Robert F. Prevost as the 267th successor to the Chair of St. Peter. The newly elected Pope, who will take the name Leo XIV, steps into the role after weeks of mourning following the death of Pope Francis.

In a heartfelt message, Bishop Zurek acknowledged the emotional and spiritual weight of the moment for Catholics around the world, while expressing confidence in the Church's selection. “Every time we get a new Pope, I hear from different people—some are good friends, some are priests, some are bishops—and they always want to know what do I think of the one who’s elected?” Zurek remarked. “Well, we have not been praying in vain all these weeks since Pope Francis died. I am convinced and have been convinced for years that God gives us the Pope that we need at that point in history.”

The Bishop emphasized the sacred nature of the conclave, the gathering of Cardinals who vote to elect the new Pope, highlighting that it is a process steeped in tradition, prayer, and discernment. “The Spirit has chosen him for us, now, and Pope Leo XIV is going to be our Pope,” he affirmed.

Though Bishop Zurek has not met the new pontiff personally, he expressed admiration and trust in the Cardinals’ choice. Referring to Pope Leo XIV's multicultural roots and global perspective, he noted, “He is an American; we would have to say he is an American from North America, an American from Central America and South America. It’s a whole lot of America in this man.”

The election of an American Pope is a historic moment for the global Church. Cardinal Prevost, a native of the United States with extensive pastoral experience across Latin America, has long been known for his administrative leadership and pastoral care.

“I trust again that the Spirit has guided the Cardinals well, beyond their imagination,” said Zurek. “And I think we’ve got a good one.”

Church leaders across the world have echoed similar sentiments, recognizing the responsibility and hope that come with a new papal leader. Bishop Zurek called on the Catholic faithful, particularly members of the clergy, to offer their full support to Pope Leo XIV and pray for his success in shepherding the Church.

“If you ask, where do I stand in relationship with Pope Leo XIV? I’m a Roman Catholic priest, dedicated to serving the Roman Catholic Church throughout the world,” Zurek concluded. “Of course, I would give him my wholehearted support and I will continue my prayers for him, that he be the best Pope he can possibly be.”

As Pope Leo XIV prepares to begin his papacy, Catholics around the world are encouraged to unite in prayer for their new spiritual leader—a figure many hope will bring renewed energy, clarity, and compassion to the global Church at a pivotal time in history.
