Amarillo City Council to canvass May 3 election, call runoff for place 3 seat

On Tuesday, May 13, at 2 p.m., the Amarillo City Council will hold a special meeting to officially canvass the results of the May 3 municipal election. In addition to confirming the election results, the council will also formally call a runoff election for the Place 3 council seat.

This runoff became necessary after no candidate secured a majority of the vote for Place 3. Voters will return to the polls on Saturday, June 7, to choose between the incumbent, Councilmember Tom Scherlen, and challenger David Prescott. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on election day.

Early voting will be available over two short windows: May 27 to May 30, and again on June 2 and June 3. Eligible voters who did not participate in the May 3 election are still allowed to vote in the runoff, but they must be registered by Thursday, May 9.

Immediately following the May 13 canvass, four councilmembers will be sworn in for new two-year terms:

Mayor Cole Stanley

Tim Reid (Place 1)

Don Tipps (Place 2)

Les Simpson (Place 4)

A reception will also be held to honor outgoing Place 1 Councilmember Josh Craft, who did not seek reelection.

Until the Place 3 runoff is resolved, Councilmember Tom Scherlen will continue to serve, as outlined in the city charter. A special meeting is tentatively scheduled for June 17 to canvass the runoff results and swear in the winner.

The regularly scheduled City Council meeting will take place at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, immediately after the swearing-in ceremony.

Residents are encouraged to check the City of Amarillo’s website as well as the Potter and Randall County election websites for finalized polling locations and updates.
