For as long as anyone around the Texas Panhandle can remember, the road to a District Championship in girls basketball has run straight through Canyon High School. Year after year, the Lady Eagles have set the standard, blending elite talent with a culture built on discipline, toughness, and expectation.

That tradition hasn’t slowed a bit.

Under Tate Lombard, Canyon continues to look every part of a championship contender. The Lady Eagles entered the week ranked No. 2 in Class 4A statewide and sitting comfortably atop District 4-4A with an unblemished 11-0 mark. Friday night at Joe Lombard Gymnasium, Canyon reinforced its status with a dominant 56-23 win over arch-rival Randall.

Theresa Mode led the charge with a game-high 15 points, setting the tone early and often. Kambrie Graser added 10, while the depth of the Canyon lineup once again proved overwhelming. From the opening tip, the Lady Eagles played with pace and confidence, racing out to a 13-2 lead as Mode knocked down multiple perimeter shots. Contributions from Addison Cunningham, Tai Wright, and Graser pushed the advantage to 26-9 by halftime.

Randall, now 12-16 overall and 7-3 in district play, struggled to keep up away from the comfort of Leslie Broadhurst Gymnasium, where the Lady Raiders have been far more effective this season. Despite a push in the third quarter behind eight points apiece from Hailey Hedrick and Carmella Guerrero, the deficit only narrowed to 34-22 heading into the final period.

That would be as close as it got.

Canyon clamped down defensively and poured it on offensively, outscoring Randall 22-1 in the fourth quarter to close out another emphatic district victory. The Lady Raiders looked ahead to a home doubleheader against West Plains in hopes of regaining momentum, while Canyon turned its focus northward with a district trip to Dumas.

The success at Canyon extended beyond the girls’ side Friday night.

In the boys’ contest, the Canyon Eagles, led by first-year head coach Kyle Lovorn, continued their strong district run with a 56-41 win over Randall. The victory pushed Canyon to 22-6 overall and 7-2 in District 4-4A play.

Senior point guard Jordan Webber delivered a night to remember, scoring 16 points and reaching the 1,000-point milestone for his career, cementing his place in Eagle basketball history. Clayton Wilcox chipped in 13 points, while Brox Hacker added seven. Canyon controlled the tempo throughout, taking a 26-18 lead into halftime and stretching the margin to 42-26 after three quarters.

Randall stayed competitive behind a combined 20 points from Thompson and Hardy, but Canyon’s efficiency at the free-throw line and steady execution proved to be the difference.

On a night that showcased the depth and consistency of Canyon basketball, both programs sent a clear message. In District 4-4A, championships still run through Joe Lombard Gymnasium.
