Buffs dominate Sul Ross State 56-7 for homecoming win

It was a Homecoming night to remember at Bain-Schaeffer Buffalo Stadium, where 7,234 fans watched West Texas A&M put on an offensive clinic in a 56-7 rout of Sul Ross State on Saturday. The Buffs scored 49 points in the first half, showcasing efficiency, explosiveness, and defensive grit in their Lone Star Conference showdown.

Fast Start Sets the Tone

Quarterback RJ Martinez wasted no time getting the Buffs rolling. After finding Drew Zamar for a key 19-yard gain on the opening drive, Martinez capped it with a 24-yard touchdown strike to Trevin Edwards. Kicker Drew Cox added the extra point, and just like that, WT was on the board.

Moments later, running back Gene Sledge powered his way into the end zone from a yard out, extending the lead to 14-0. Meanwhile, the Buffs’ defense stifled the Lobos, forcing a turnover on downs at the 10-yard line to preserve the shutout through the first quarter.

Second Quarter Explosion

The Buffs’ offense went into overdrive in the second quarter. Martinez delivered a 52-yard bomb to Zamar for another score, then punched one in himself from a yard out after a 51-yard completion to Jamir Roberts. The lead ballooned to 28-0, and WT wasn’t done yet.

Edwards added his second touchdown reception of the night on a 22-yard catch, followed by a 45-yard strike to Zach Phipps. A blocked punt by Kadyn Waites set up another quick score, with Jayden Hibbler finding the end zone on a 1-yard rush. By halftime, WT was in full command, leading 49-0.

Defense, Ground Game Close it Out

The Buffs’ defense continued its dominance after halftime. Key sacks from Caydin Blakely, Jahmek Armstrong, Hayden Jansky, and Campbell Packebush stifled Sul Ross State’s offense. On the other side of the ball, Jamaal Joseph capped a steady third-quarter drive with a 5-yard touchdown run, pushing the lead to 56-0.

The Lobos finally broke through in the fourth quarter with a 75-yard drive capped by Jose Trevino’s 1-yard touchdown run, but it was far too late. WT’s defense locked in the rest of the way, sealing the decisive 56-7 victory.

Stat Leaders

Martinez delivered a near-flawless performance, completing 19 of 22 passes for 332 yards and four touchdowns, plus a rushing score. Zamar made the most of his touches with two catches for 71 yards and a touchdown. Edwards hauled in two touchdowns on three receptions for 56 yards. On defense, Packebush led the way with five tackles and a sack, anchoring a unit that consistently pressured the Lobos’ backfield.

Looking Ahead

With the win, the Buffs head into their bye week brimming with confidence. Up next: one of the biggest games of the season, the annual Wagon Wheel Game against Eastern New Mexico, set for Saturday, October 18 at 7 p.m. at Bain-Schaeffer Buffalo Stadium.

For now, though, West Texas A&M can savor a Homecoming performance that showed just how dangerous this team can be when firing on all cylinders.
