A Potter County grand jury has declined to indict an Amarillo man in connection with the death of Michael Mayfield, who died during a physical altercation earlier this year.
John Duggan was initially accused of killing Mayfield during a fight that took place on March 9 in the 300 block of N. Carolina Street. Around 2:30 p.m. that day, Amarillo police responded to a medical call at the location and discovered that Mayfield had died at the scene. Investigators determined that a physical altercation had occurred between the two men prior to Mayfield’s death.
Following months of investigation, the case was formally presented to the Potter County Grand Jury on July 23, 2025, by the Amarillo Police Department (APD) Homicide Unit in coordination with the Potter County District Attorney's Office. After reviewing the evidence, the grand jury returned a “no bill” — a legal term indicating that there was not enough evidence to proceed with criminal charges against Duggan.
The grand jury’s decision effectively ends any potential prosecution against Duggan in this case.
In a public statement, the Amarillo Police Department emphasized the importance of the grand jury process and reaffirmed its commitment to justice.
“The Amarillo Police Department remains committed to transparency and the pursuit of justice. We acknowledge the complexity of this matter and the impact that such decisions have on the community. The APD and the Potter County District Attorney’s Office will continue to work diligently to ensure that all cases are investigated thoroughly and resolved in accordance with the law.”
