Joe Biden finally doing something about the border?

President Joe Biden is considering an executive order to address the influx of immigrants at the southern border after Republicans killed the long-sought border legislation in the Senate this week.

Two U.S. officials told NBC News that the White House wants to take action to preempt a likely rise in encounters at the border, as efforts by Congress to stem the record figures failed again this week. The officials said plans for an executive order have been under consideration for months, particularly after immigrant encounters at the border broke an all-time record in December.

The officials said the executive order is likely to upset some progressives in Congress, likely those who came out and voted against the Senate border bill that took White House officials and Senate Democrat and Republican leadership months to negotiate.

However, they noted that Democratic mayors from areas suffering from the thousands of immigrants entering their cities will be happy, such as Mayors Brandon Johnson in Chicago and Mike Johnston in Denver.

The officials said any action Biden takes himself would pale in comparison to what the bipartisan border deal could have achieved.

Biden said on Tuesday that the bipartisan border bill would have “made important fixes to our broken immigration system,” calling it “the toughest, fairest law” on the border ever proposed.

“Congressional Republicans chose to put partisan politics ahead of our national security and voted against what border agents have said they need,” a White House spokesperson said in a statement responding to the Senate border bill failing to pass. “No regulatory actions would accomplish what the bipartisan national security agreement would have done for border security and the immigration system at large.”

Shortly after it appeared the deal was going to fail, Biden made it clear he intended to pin the bill’s collapse and the general sense of chaos at the border on former President Donald Trump.

“Every day between now and November, the American people are going to know that the only reason the border is not secure is Donald Trump and his MAGA Republican friends,” Biden said Tuesday.
