Number of independent voters at record high

As the 2024 presidential election year kicks off, voters identifying as independents have reached a record high, as Democratic identification reaches record lows, according to a new poll from Gallup.

On average, 43% of adults in the United States identified as Independents in 2023, tying with 2014's record high, according to Gallup.

Since 2011, voters who identify as Independents have been at 40% of higher, except in 2016 and 2020, which were both presidential election years.

Both Democratic and Republican identification declined by one percentage point.

The Gallup poll surveyed more than 12,000 U.S. adults in 2023 asking whether they identify as a Democrat, Republican, or Independent.
