One of the Texas House’s top lieutenants has drawn a primary challenge ahead of next year’s election.
Wade Cowan, a West Texas farmer and businessman who has served as chairman of the American Soybean Association, announced a run against state Rep. Dustin Burrows (R-Lubbock), who chairs the powerful Calendars Committee.
In announcing for HD 83, Cowan said, “I don’t like Austin, but someone has got to go up there and represent our interests.”
“Our current representative is just another self-dealing lawyer pushing a personal agenda. Power has become more important to him than serving the people he represents. I’ve had enough of it. It’s about time to send a farmer to fight for our interests in the state capitol.”
Cowan is using Axiom Strategies, one of the nation’s largest political consulting firms, which also serves as Sen. Ted Cruz’s (R-TX) and Attorney General Ken Paxton’s consultant. Axiom is the firm behind many of the primary challenges against House Republicans who voted for impeachment.
“I am proud of my deeply conservative record of results for our community, including the expansions and increased funding to Texas Tech University, the recent largest property tax cut in history, passing constitutional carry for gun owners, and banning abortion,” Burrows told The Texan in response to Cowan’s announcement.
This won’t be the first time the two have squared off. Burrows was an attorney who in 2014 sued Cowan and West Texas Guar, along with the hedge fund behind it, over a breach of contract for payment of more than $20 million worth of guar crop. Burrows’ clients eventually won a settlement and a significant payout.
