Lubbock Police Chief Floyd Mitchell resigns

The City of Lubbock announced late Tuesday that Police Chief Floyd Mitchell has resigned after four years with the department.

Very few details were provided with the City’s announcement.

The only city official cited in the announcement, City Manager Jarrett Atkinson, thanked Chief Mitchell for his service to the community.

When local reports this summer criticized Mitchell's management for what they claimed were “abandoned” 911 calls from a shortage of dispatchers, Atkinson spoke to City Council at the first meeting of the city's special budget session on July 31, saying 55% of those calls to 911 were found to be accidental.

According to the release, the City will be naming an interim police chief in the coming days.

Mitchell, who previously served in the United States Air Force, was Lubbock’s first Black police chief. He was appointed to his position leading the Lubbock Police Department in 2019, after previously serving as police chief in Temple, Texas.

Mitchell's last day with LPD will be Friday, September 22.
