The march toward a Lone Star Conference Championship begins on Saturday night as eight of the nine football playing institutions are in action against league foes. UT Permian Basin travels to Southwest Baptist for a non-conference contest.
LSC football began in 1931. Texas A&M-Kingsville posts a conference-best 27 championships, with its first coming in 1959 and last in 2009. West Texas A&M (1986, 2005-2007 and 2012) has won five LSC crowns. Angelo State (also 1978, 1984 and 1987) and Midwestern State (also 2011-2012 and 2017) each have four. Eastern New Mexico has won twice (1991 and 2013).

The Mustangs enter the weekend with an overall record of 1-1 following a 30-17 victory over Mississippi College last Saturday night in Wichita Falls.
Reigning LSC Offensive Player of the Week Devin Cross leads the way offensively for the Mustangs as the Pflugerville native has carried the ball 35 times for 209 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Defensively, senior Quinterrius Hargrave from Mesquite leads the way with 12 total tackles (five solo).

Five-time LSC Coach of the Year Bill Maskill is now in his 22nd season at the helm of the Midwestern State Football program. Maskill enters Saturday with an overall career record of 170-74.
He holds an overall record of 157-66 during his time in Wichita Falls with eight trips to the NCAA Playoffs and five LSC Championships (2009, 2011, 2012, 2017, 2021).

The Buffs lead the all-time series 20-15 against the Mustangs dating back to the 1947 campaign. Midwestern State is 8-10 all-time in Canyon including 0-2 at Bain-Schaeffer Buffalo Stadium with those trips coming in 2019 (34-24) and 2021 (15-12).

Josh Lynn is in his first season at the helm of the West Texas A&M Football program after being named the 29th head coach in program history in December of 2022.
Lynn, widely regarded as one of the nation's up-and-coming head coaches, came to Canyon following six seasons at the University of Nebraska-Kearney where he led the Lopers to an overall record of 35-25 including a run to the Second Round of the 2021 NCAA Division II Playoffs. Lynn coached 61 all-conference selections during his time in Kearney while being named the MIAA Coach of the Year in 2021.

The Buffaloes have been tabbed fifth in the 2023 Lone Star Conference Preseason Poll announced during the league's annual Football Media Day.
