Buffs drop season opener to Western Colorado 28-6

The WT Buffaloes couldn't find a rhythm offensively on Saturday afternoon as they dropped their season opener on the road to the Western Colorado Mountaineers at Katy O. Rady Field in Gunnison, Colorado.

The Mountaineers jumped out to an early lead as they marched down the field on their first possession of the game, converting on a pair of third downs on their way to a 13-play drive that spanned 73-yard drive finished off by a Deyvon Butler two-yard run for the early 7-0 lead.
Western Colorado turned a Buffalo mistake into points late in the first quarter as an interception by Andrew Arterburn setup a two-yard touchdown run by Butler for his second score of the afternoon to give WCU the 14-0 lead.
The WT defense stepped up and forced their first turnover early in the second as Koby King fell on a loose ball forced by Kendall Brewer to setup a 33-yard field goal by Preston Gregg to cut the WCU lead to 14-3. The Buffs forced a Mountaineer punt as Tyler Sweet setup WT with great field position following a 41-yard return that led to a Gregg 22-yard field goal to make it 14-6.
Western Colorado put the game away late in the fourth quarter as a 64-yard completion on third and long setup a Braeden Hogan three-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 21-6. The Mountaineers turned the second WT interception of the game into points again as Wyatt Buhr's takeaway was followed one play later by Butler's third rushing touchdown of the game, this one from 23 yards out to make it 28-6.
The Buffs finished the game with 239 yards of total offense with 108 of those coming on the ground. Tray'vian McCoy-Gay impressed in his collegiate debut as the redshirt freshman carried the ball 16 times for a team-high 72 yards. Kyle Brown completed 11-of-26 passes for 95 yards and an interception while Kris Sims caught three passes for a team-high 31 yards.
Defensively, the Buffaloes allowed 324 yards of total offense with 166 of those coming on the ground. Koby King, Jimmy Harrison and JT Cavender led the way with six tackles each as King also recovered a fumble.  
The Buffs open their home schedule next weekend as they welcome the Grizzlies of Adam State to Bain-Schaeffer Buffalo Stadium for Hall of Champions Weekend, kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
