One person dead after officer involved shooting in Amarillo


Wednesday evening, Amarillo police officers were sent to the 1600 block of SW 48 on a domestic call. 

APD officers had been called the same residence earlier in the evening, but the suspect was not present. The female was told to call if he came back and she needed assistance. 

When officers returned later in the evening, the suspect was located inside a vehicle in the south alley near the residence. APD officers approached and blocked the suspect's vehicle in the alley.

The suspect attempted to leave the scene, He backed into one patrol car, a dumpster, and almost hit a  patrol unit occupied by an officer.

APD officials said the suspect began driving toward the second officer and his patrol car. The suspect rammed the patrol car into a shed and fence. 

The officer fired his weapon, hitting the suspect. Life saving measures on the suspect were taken by the officers until the Amarillo Fire Department and AMS arrived. 

Officials identified the suspect as 39 year old Daniel M Smith. 

Smith was taken to an area hospital with life threatening injuries. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The APD homicide unit and CSI are investigating this incident.
