Early Monday afternoon, Amarillo police officers were called to Amarillo High School on a bomb threat. Amarillo ISD put the school on lockdown.
Amarillo Police, AISD Officers secured the parking lots and began searching the school. Additional officers and Randall County Deputies were called to assist and the parking lot was also searched.
Once the school and parking lot were cleared, the students were allowed to leave school.
“AISD chose to lock down the school. We searched the school with our officers and with AISD police. Then we also brought in additional police officers and Randall County deputies to search the parking lot as well to make sure that we got every part of the school once that was complete and everything was rendered or determined to be safe, the students were allowed to leave,” said Sgt. Carla Burr with the Amarillo Police Department.
APD and AISD officials also reminded everyone to pay attention to where they are getting information concerning these types of situations.
“If you’re getting on social media and following a credible news source like you guys, are following the school district or following the police department and sharing that information. That’s perfect, but please don’t get on there and share rumors and things that aren’t true. We do not want to cause a panic in our community for something that is not happening,” said Burr.
