Early Monday afternoon, Amarillo police officers were sent to the area of NE 24th and N. Arthur on multiple shots being fired. Several callers reported the incident and said numerous shots were fired.
Officers also learned that a student on the tennis courts at Palo Duro High School had been shot in the hand, from a stray bullet from this incident.
Both PDHS and Whittier Elementary went into lockdown for the safety of their students. There was no indication that this incident involved any students nor was there any information that any incident occurred at either of the schools.
The Palo Duro student was taken to an area hospital. The student's injury was non-life threatening.
APD's violent crimes unit and CSI is on scene. The investigation into this shooting is ongoing.
At this time, no arrests have been made. The lockdown has been lifted at both schools.

We secured the campuses of Palo Duro High School and Hamlet Elementary this afternoon after reports of gunshots in the neighborhood west of the Palo Duro High School tennis courts. During a secure, the outside doors of school buildings are locked and students remain inside.A student at Palo Duro who was located outside on the tennis courts received a minor, non-life-threatening injury to the hand and was taken to the hospital as a precaution.The safety of our students and staff is always our top priority. We communicated regular updates to parents throughout the situation and we’re grateful for their patience and support and for the diligence of Amarillo ISD Police and Amarillo Police.
