Suspect arrested after shooting incident in SW Amarillo: One person sent to the hospital in serious condition

Early Monday morning, Amarillo police officers were dispatched to a residence in the 4200 block of Mesa on a possible fight. One caller stated that shots had been fired and at least one person had injuries.

When officers arrived on scene, a female victim with injuries reported that the suspect had left the area on foot. One of the victims was taken to an area hospital in serious condition. The other two victims were treated at the scene for their injuries by paramedics.

Officers saw the suspect running and he forced entry into an office building in the 4200 block of Ridgecrest. A perimeter was setup around the building, due to the original call reporting shots fired. It was unknown if the suspect was armed with a weapon.

The APD Critical Incident Response Team was called out. Swat officers took over the perimeter of the building.

Negotiators attempted to call the suspect out via phone, PA, and over the Bomb Team robot. The robot made entry to the building to search and found that the suspect was barricaded in the building.

Swat introduced gas into the building and the suspect came out. He had injured himself breaking into the building and was transported to an area hospital for medical treatment.

Once he was released from the hospital, Benjamin Bererra, 21, was transported to the Randall County detention center. He was arrested for 3 counts of Aggravated Assault w/Deadly Weapon, Burglary of a Building, Evading on Foot and Resisting Arrest.

This case is still being investigated by the APD violent crimes unit.
