Man arrested after chase with Amarillo police

Sunday morning, Amarillo police officers were called to the 900 block of west Hastings Avenue on a male trying to break into a vehicle. The suspect ran through several yards and jumped fences in an effort to elude officers.

Officers saw the man run into an open garage in the 900 block of Hastings. The suspect stole a red Ford truck out of the garage and fled the scene.

The suspect went to a residence in the 2100 block of northwest 2nd Avenue, where he ran inside and barricaded the door.

As more officers were arriving at the scene to set up a perimeter on the house, the suspect came out, got back into the truck, and fled.

Officers pursued the suspect south on Georgia Street, where he exited the vehicle in a parking lot at southwest 15th and Georgia Street. He approached and grabbed a female.

An undercover officer saw this happen and attempted to contact the suspect, who jumped back into the truck and fled onto I-40 westbound.

The suspect exited I-40 at the Bell Street exit and turned north on Alice Street. APD SWAT officers were in the area and were able to contain the driver in the vehicle at the stop sign of Alice Street and Plains Boulevard.

Officers took the suspect into custody. He was booked at the Potter County Detention Center for Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle, Criminal Mischief, Evading Arrest, Evading Arrest in Motor Vehicle, Criminal Trespass of a Habitation, and Failure to Identify.

The suspect gave the name of Jose Sanchez, 51, but had not been positively identified at the time of booking.
