Lady Buffs win NCAA Division II Track & Field National Championship


The Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M are once again national champions as they took hold of the 2022 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championship title on Saturday. WT claimed its second national title in four years as the Lady Buffs tallied a program record 77 points with 15 All-Americans and four national champions.

The Lady Buffs scored 46 points on the final day highlighted by Zada Swoopes and Leah Belfield's national titles.  
 
Swoopes got the day started in the morning as she led off the shot put event with a leading 53-11.75 (16.45m) throw to jump to first.  She held on to the lead after throwing 54-9.5 (16.70m) on her fourth throw to secure her second straight outdoor national title and fifth title overall after also winning the indoor shot put title. 
 
The quartet of Jordanae' Scott, Leah Belfield, Alana Wilson and DeOndra Green added eight points to the Lady Buffs team score after finishing second in the 4x100-meter relay.  WT ran a program record 44.31 to fall just 0.02 seconds short of Minnesota State Mankato. 
 
Amarillo native Brooke Urban finished 16th in the high jump as the sophomore cleared 5-5.75 (1.67m) in her second outdoor national appearance. 
 
WT scored 28 major points in the 100 and 200 from Belfield and Green to secure the Lady Buffs victory.  In the 100-meter finals, the duo finish 2-3 with Green running 11.78 followed closely behind by Belfield at 11.80.  They returned for the 200 where Belfield became the first Lady Buff to win the outdoor national title, breaking her own program record at 23.30.  Green finished fifth to earn All-American honors with a time of 23.55.
