Earlier this week, the Canyon City Commission voted to official make the Brown Road Sportsplex a city park. The Brown Road Sports Complex is located at 350 W 4th Ave. in Canyon
“We started with a vision of what we wanted this complex to become,” said Brian Noel, Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Canyon. “With the hard work of the Parks Employees and financial partners like Palo Duro Soccer, we have turned a pasture into a first-rate athletic complex. We still have plans for more field development and other amenities in the future.”
The 37-acre complex was once the home to weeds, cactus, and cattle. In 1998, the City of Canyon provided this location to the Palo Duro Soccer Association (PDSA) for playing fields, then later went on to commit the City to create the complex.
In 2011, a pavilion with restrooms and storage space for PDSA was built. Additionally, a playground was added to the site in 2018. The soccer fields were identified as the Soccer Field of the Year by the Texas Turfgrass Association in 2019.
The Brown Road Sports Complex is also the host of 12 flag football fields and six baseball practice fields. The City of Canyon Parks and Recreation Department averages 75 baseball games, 30 baseball practices and 50 soccer games weekly during the spring and summer.
“With a playset, a walking trail, and fantastic athletic fields, this complex has something to meet the needs of all residents. Brian Noel, Canyon Parks Department Director, developed a vision for this facility and he and the Parks staff have worked diligently to create this great complex.
“This complex is a result of many years of work by the Parks Department and also the Palo Duro Soccer Association which has donated funds throughout the years to improve the facility. Dedicating the park basically ensures that this facility will remain a park in Canyon and that citizens will be able to enjoy it for many years to come," Canyon Assistant City Manager Jon Behrens said.
