Red Raiders earn number 3 seed in NCAA Tournament

Texas Tech is headed to San Diego, California as the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament West Region where a first-round matchup against No. 14 Montana State is set for 10:45 a.m. (PST) on Friday at Viejas Arena at Aztec Bowl. The game will be broadcasted on TNT.

The Red Raiders (25-9) are making their fourth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament and 19th appearance overall. Tech's run of four appearances in a row is a program record and comes with successful trips to the 2018 Elite 8, 2019 NCAA National Championship Final and the 2021 Second Round.

Montana State (27-7) earned an automatic bid for the NCAA Tournament by winning the Big Sky Championship with an 87-66 win over Northern Colorado on Saturday. The Notre Dame/Rutgers First Four matchup on Wednesday advances to play Alabama on Friday in San Diego. The TTU-MSU winner will play the winner of that game on Sunday.

Texas Tech is 3-1 all-time against Montana State, including a 32-27 win in the first meeting on December 29, 1939 in Oklahoma City and most recently an 86-67 victory on January 3, 1996 in Lubbock.

The Red Raiders are 8-3 over the past three tournaments which is the third most wins nationally with Gonzaga and Michigan tied for the most with 10. Baylor, Houston and Duke each have seven and Virginia has six. After the 2020 tournament was canceled due to COVID, the program returned last season to advance to the 2021 NCAA Second Round after a win over Utah State before falling to Arkansas.

Tech has now made the NCAA Tournament in 1954, 1956, 1961, 1962, 1973, 1976, 1985, 1986, 1993, 1996, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022.
