DPS releases names of victims in fatal Andrews County accident


The Department of Public Safety has released the names of passengers in the fatal accident involving members of the University of the Southwest golf team.

Nine people died and two were transported to a hospital in Lubbock following a crash Tuesday night in Andrews. 

A  Ford Transit Van carrying members of the University of the Southwest golf team and a Dodge 2500 pickup with two passengers were involved in the crash at about 8:17 p.m., according to DPS. Preliminary reports indicate that the pickup was traveling southbound on FM 1788 when it drove into the northbound lane striking the van carrying the USW golf team. Both vehicles caught fire and burned, DPS reported.  The crash occurred approximately a half-mile north of State Highway 115 in Andrews County. 

Six of the golf team members that died in the accident are Maurico Sanchez, 19, of Mexico; Travis Garcia, 19, of Pleasanton; Jackson Zinn, 22, of Westminster, Colorado; Karissa Raines, 21, of Fort Stockton; Laci Stone, 18, of Nocona; Tiago Sousa, 18, of Portugal and head coach Tyler James, 26, of Hobbs, New Mexico; 

Dayton Price, 19, Mississauga Ontario, Canada and Hayden Underhill, 20, of Amherstview Ontario, Canada, were transported to University Medical Center Lubbock and are in critical condition. 

The passengers in the pickup have been identified as Henrich Siemens, 38, of Seminole, and a 13-year-old boy whose name will not be released at this time.

It is unknown if the passengers in the vehicles were wearing seatbelts. 

The crash is being investigated by the Texas Highway Patrol’s West Texas Region District Crash Team with assistance by the National Transportation Safety Board. The crash investigation is still ongoing.
