City of Amarillo to replace all existing water meters

The City of Amarillo (COA) is implementing an Automated Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Project. AMI will modernize water service for every customer in the city by replacing the more than 70,000 traditional water meters with a cutting-edge smart meter digital system.

The AMI Project is funded from a $29.5 million loan (with a $1 million loan forgiveness) by the Texas Water Development Board’s Clean Water State Revolving Fund.

The advantages of AMI system are many, including:

Customers can monitor their water use with an online platform.

Customers will be alerted to unusual water usage such as leaks or unusual water usage with a customized email or text alert, which will help conserve the area’s water supply.

The AMI system will provide a more accurate reading of water usage and ensure accurate billing.

“The AMI Project is arguably the most significant improvement in water service in Amarillo in recent memory. This project will impact almost every individual in Amarillo,” said COA Director of Utilities Jonathan Gresham. “Customers are going to be pleased with the convenience and accuracy of their water bills and their ability to personally monitor their water use.”

Software integration for the AMI Project is scheduled to begin in April with project completion estimated for spring of 2024.
