Through continued investigation into the September 6th shooting and death of Laura Ashley, Amarillo Police Department detectives have obtained a warrant for her murder. The suspect in the death of Ashley is David Lee Winfield.

Winfield was booked into the Potter County jail on September 30th for the 4 shootings in Eastridge and is still incarcerated.

“Right now, the information that we have confirms what we suspected at first in that this was random violence.

"The people had no idea who this person was, and they were just, unfortunately, at the wrong place at the wrong time when the shooter decided to commit these violent acts.

“The police department is committed to making sure that Amarillo is a safe place to live. We know that violent crime is an issue right now, and we are going to continue to do everything in our power to keep these things from happening, but also holding those accountable who commit these heinous crimes,” Amarillo Police Chief Martin Birkenfeld said.

On Monday September 6th, officers with the Amarillo Police Department investigated five shootings in north Amarillo. Investigators are asking for any information that could help identify the suspect.
