Wife of Republican Texas gubernatorial candidate Allen West arrested on DWI charge

The wife of Republican Texas gubernatorial candidate Allen West was arrested Friday night on suspicion of driving while intoxicated while her grandson was in the car.

Angela West was booked into the Dallas County jail on a charge of driving while intoxicated with a child under 15 years of age, according to a police report. Allen West said in a tweet posted just after 3 p.m. that she had been released. She does not appear in jail records.

According to the report, Angela West was pulled over around 8:45 p.m. Friday in the 2300 block of West Northwest Highway, near Loop 12 and Harry Hines Boulevard. The report said the officer believed she was intoxicated and performed a sobriety test, which led to her arrest.

She was taken to the Dallas County jail and officers took a blood sample, the report states.

In a video posted to Twitter around 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Allen West said he had come back from having dinner in Waco when he found out about the arrest. He said he was told his wife had been charged with “suspected DUI.”

Speaking from jail, he said his grandson was left with two Dallas police officers until his youngest daughter was able to pick him up “from the side of the road.” Dallas police, though, said the child was released to his father.

“I support the thin blue line, but this is insidious,” West said in the video.

“They put my grandson at risk, at jeopardy, left him with a couple of police officers, and carted his grandmother into jail,” West said.

West said that his wife had dinner at a P.F. Chang’s in Dallas before her arrest and that witnesses said she only drank water and lemonade at the restaurant.

“I am beyond livid,” he said. “I’m telling you something, the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office, the Dallas police chief — I want an explanation for this.”

The Police Department and the Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
