APHD offering 3rd COVID-19 vaccine dose

In accordance with recent recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Amarillo Public Health Department (APHD) will be providing a third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine beginning Wednesday for individuals with certain health characteristics.

APHD will begin offering third doses of the COVID-19 vaccine from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday (Aug. 18). This will be a walk-in clinic (no appointments) at the building next to the APHD main building at 850 Martin Road.

The CDC recommends a third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine for moderately to severely immunocompromised people. This includes people who have been receiving active cancer treatment for tumors or cancers of the blood, received an organ transplant and are taking medicine to suppress the immune system, received a stem cell transplant within the last two years or are taking medicine to suppress the immune system. This also includes those with moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency (such as DiGeorge syndrome, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome), advanced or untreated HIV infection and those receiving active treatment with high-dose corticosteroids or other drugs that may suppress the immune response.

People should talk to their healthcare provider about their medical condition, and whether getting an additional dose is appropriate for them.
