Get ready for AMA-CON Outside!
This will be a one-day event on Saturday, July 31 from 8 AM to 1 PM on and around the grounds of Amarillo Public Library’s Southwest Branch. AMA-CON vendors are invited to participate at a greatly reduced cost and this new event will include a Cosplay Parade around McDonald Lake.
Organizers are working on other cool things to see and do in a brief event before the day gets too hot so please continue to watch this space.
Geek Prom Fans—they haven’t forgotten you. Organizers are working on a plan to allow the Geek Prom to take place on Saturday evening so stay tuned for details about that as well.
At 1 PM, the Gaming Hall will open in the North Exhibit Hall at the Amarillo Civic Center. There will be video games, tabletop games, and gaming art. The Gaming Hall will remain open until 10 PM and the Geek Prom will begin at 6.
Tickets? There will be no charge to visit AMA-CON Outside, shop with vendors, meet your friends, and show off your cosplay.
AMA-CON will sell wristbands for $5 each. These will allow you to participate in special activities in the park, as well as visit the Gaming Hall and attend the Geek Prom.
Wristbands will go on sell a couple of weeks before AMA-CON in the Friends Store inside the Downtown Amarillo Public Library, but you'll also be able to purchase them at the door.
"The City of Amarillo did not tell us we couldn’t have AMA-CON because of the COVID vaccination clinics taking place at the Amarillo Civic Center. However, we have sought advice from experts on the best way to have the con safely in light of Amarillo’s current rate of less than 40% fully vaccinated and the emergence of more contagious and more dangerous variants. This is the best plan to have an event that celebrates all the geeky and awesome things we love AND protects the health of our community.
"By limiting activities at the Civic Center to gaming and the Geek Prom, we can scale down the indoor portion of the event to a size that allows us to comply with safety protocols. We would not be able to do that for a con with thousands of people attending multiple events scattered across four giant exhibit halls.
"While we share everyone’s eagerness to get back to normal, we can’t think of anything worse than our beloved con being the reason that people become ill or other events are canceled or delayed.
"This inside/outside con is something we’ve never done before, so in many ways, we are figuring it out as we go along. We are grateful for your patience and the support you have always shown to AMA-CON and the Friends of the Amarillo Public Library.
"Finally, we know this isn’t the AMA-CON that you have all grown to love over the past years.
