Randall County mourns the passing of Sergeant Christopher Shayne Mays


On Wednesday, the Randall County Sheriff’s Office announced the death of Sergeant Christopher Shayne Mays. Mays was 47 years old.

Mays was a 10-year member of the Randall County Sheriff’s Office. He began his career in 1999 working in the Randall County Jail, before joining the Canyon Police Department.

Sgt. Mays returned to Randall County as a patrol deputy in 2013. For the past seven years, Sgt. Mays worked in the Special Operations Unit as a federal task force officer. 

Mays leaves behind his wife, Leticia, who is also a member of the RCSO family, and two children, the younger of which is a graduating high school senior. 

Mays died unexpectedly on Tuesday. His body was transferred to Lubbock for an autopsy. 

After the autopsy this morning, his was escorted back to Amarillo by Randall County Sheriff’s Office deputies.

Randall County officials have not revealed a cause of death at this time.
