APD officer injured in Sunday morning wreck

Early Sunday morning, an Amarillo police officer was driving southbound in the 2400 block of south Georgia Street.

A 2005 GMC Yukon driven by Nathaniel Owens, a 43 year old male of Amarillo, failed to yield right of way turning left into a private drive. This caused the Police Interceptor SUV to impact the GMC.

The GMC then struck a 2015 Toyota Tundra parked in front of a restaurant. A parked 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser was hit by the Tundra.

APD officials confirmed the officer was taken to a local area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Owens was uninjured in the collision. A passenger in the Yukon, 23 year old Jaylin Lucero, was also uninjured.

Alcohol is a factor in this crash. Owens was later booked into Potter County Detention Center for a charge of DWI 2nd. Lucero had several traffic warrants for his arrest and was booked into the Randall County Jail.

The officer was later released from the hospital. This incident is being investigated by the Traffic Investigation Squad of the Amarillo Police Department.
