One person dead after multi-vehicle crash on I-27

Late Monday afternoon, Amarillo police officers were dispatched to the 4300 block of I-27 on a motor vehicle collision in the northbound lanes.

A 2016 Toyota Tacoma driven by Rolando Martinez, 24, of Amarillo, had been northbound in the 4400 block of I-27 in the inside lane. Martinez rear-ended a 2016 Toyota Camry, driven by a 50 year old female of Amarillo. Neither vehicle was able to exit the highway. They traveled several hundred feet then stopped on the highway still in the inside lane.

A 2001 Freightliner Tractor, driven by a 57 year old male of Woodard, OK, was northbound on I-27 pulling an empty Timpte Grain hauler trailer. The driver of the semi was unable to avoid the stopped vehicles. The Freightliner struck the Tacoma which in turn struck the Camry.

Martinez and the driver of the Camry were both transported to a local area hospital. The driver of the Camry suffered non-life threatening injuries. Martinez later died as a result of injuries received in the collision.

The incident is being investigated by the Traffic Investigation Squad of the Amarillo Police Department.
