Man arrested for intoxication manslaughter after fatal crash

Tuesday evening, Amarillo police officers were dispatched to motor vehicle rollover in the 8500 block of E I-40 proper.

Upon their arrival, officers discovered a 2003 Chevy Avalanche had been eastbound on the service road, lost control, started to spin, hit a curbed then rolled several times.

The crash killed the passenger, Ashley Renee Hernandez, 31, of Amarillo. The driver, Ricardo Alfonzo Sanchez, 38, of Amarillo received non-life threatening injuries. He was taken to a local area hospital, treated and released.

Sanchez was later booked into Potter County Sheriff’s Office Jail on a charge of intoxication manslaughter.

Justice of the Peace Robert Taylor has ordered an autopsy. Speed, marijuana use, and no seat belt are factors in this collision.

The incident is being investigated by the Traffic Investigation Squad of the Amarillo Police Dept.
