Buffs rally past Texas A&M-Kingsville 35-31

West Texas A&M rushed for over 300 yards in their comeback victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville, 35-31, on Senior Day at Javelina Stadium in Kingsville. The Buffs scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to improve to 7-3 overall and 4-3 in Lone Star Conference play.

Nick Gerber did it all for the Buffs completing 13-of-23 passes for 149 while rushing for 110 yards and three touchdowns. Logan Vallo had 111 yards on the ground on 15 carries with Duke Carter IV chipping in 70 yards. Chase Sojka pulled in a team-high three receptions for 42 yards with Jamaal Hamilton, Jordan Johnson and Semaj Mitchell with two receptions a piece.

LaDarian Hudson had a team-high nine tackles followed by Fank Honang and Joseph Barron with eight. Eric Collins recorded three tackles for loss. Including a sack. Harris also had seven to go along with 75 punt returns to break the program record for most punt return yards in a single season.

The Buffs saw themselves in an early 17-0 hole a minute into the second quarter after Koy Detmer Jr. found Ryan Martinez on fourth down for a 30-yard touchdown. WT found some rhythm on their next offensive possession with Gerber scoring the first of his three rushing touchdowns. After what looked like another three-and-out, Gerber completed a 13-yard pass to Sojka followed by 22-yard completion later in the drive. Gerber would get the Buffs on the board with a career-long 32-yard run.

Gerber would score from 32 yards out right before halftime to make 24-14 in favor of the home team. Hamilton opened the drive with an 18-yard reception followed by four straight runs. Semaj Mitchell's 17-yard reception put them in Javelina territory before Gerber ran for his second of the game.

WT made it a one score game on their first drive of the second half on Gerber's third rushing touchdown. Carter IV accounted for 49 yards in the opening three plays including a 16-yard run before Gerber ran it from six yards out on fourth-and-1 to make it 24-21. The Javelinas scored their final touchdown of the game with 7:33 remaining in the third after Donte Ross' 49-yard punt return.

Harris got the rally started for the Buffs in the fourth quarter with his 45-yard interception return to the Javelina 6-yard line with 13:30 left in the game. J. Johnson recorded his eighth rushing touchdown on the next play to make it 31-28. Following a Javelina three-and-out, Harris returned the punt 72 yards for a touchdown giving the Buffs their first lead of the game.

TAMUK drove into the Buff red zone with under five minutes remaining but Chazz Slatinsky picked off Detmer Jr. in the end zone. The Buffs sealed the victory on the ground after Vallo busted off back-to-back runs of 10 yards after the Javelina's had called all three of their timeouts.

WT finish the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 16 when they host Midwestern State on Senior Day at Buffalo Stadium.
